Cathedrals

Just watching a show on BBC Four about cathedrals and it made me think how big they must have seemed compared to the tallest buildings that people at that time must have seen.
Assuming an average house in the middle ages was a two storey building at around 24ft. And the 524ft of Lincoln Cathedral 1185-1311.

The tallest building now is the Burj Khalifa at 2,723ft which is a dizzying height but in comparative terms if lincoln was built now exceeding the largest buildings of today as it did back then it would be about 59,443ft tall. Which is around 11 miles.

Ignoring of course that Lincoln Cathedral was the tallest building in the world when it was built. So seeing the Burj is probably to us how seeing the Cathedral felt to those in the middle ages.
